    "This builder came recommended and appeared keen to get the warm and started promptly. Unfortunately he left the job half finished and refused to answer phone calls or e-mails to come and finish off the work. We made one mistake - We paid him.

    If you are daft enough to use this builder don't pay him until he has finished everything as we will cut an run

    Very disappointing and I cannot recommend enough for you to avoid this guy like the plague. "

    "Over the past couple of months we have engaged Mark to do a couple of relatively small jobs for us: a) replacement of an inferior interior door which had been improperly installed at the time the house was built in the late 1970s with a proper exterior door suited to the elements which Mark located, modified and installed; and b) the removal of an arch between dining and living areas as it was dated and took up space.
    We can't speak highly enough of Mark's work. Everything was done to a high… standard. He came when he said he would, the jobs were completed in a timely manner and he cleaned up afterwards.

    This continues the high level of satisfaction we have with Mark's work and will continue to employ him for other modifications over time.    "

    "Having employed Mark a few months ago for an expanding and relatively complex project which was completed entirely to our satisfaction we have in intervening months employed Mark for a range of smaller jobs in the nature of deferred maintenance and have been very satisfied in every way. A couple of months ago the elderly friend for whom we care came to live next door and we needed a deck-bridge built between the two houses and through the fence. Mark saw the urgency of this work and quickly… and to a high standard built the deck which was code-compliant with regard to ease of access for people using support such as Zimmer-frames and wheel chairs. Seeing the potential from this new vantage point we decided to substantially extend this deck to take advantage of the view not so otherwise evident from the sloping lawn at the rear of the house. Mark's work throughout this whole project has been A in every way. He communicated well, came when he said he would, had the materials delivered, the decking work done by a supervised team, paying as much attention to detail as he himself, coped amenably with our wish to expand the deck even further while it was under construction (yes!), cleaned all detritus from the site, and now we have a fine asset to the property which is well finished in every respect. Mark makes helpful suggestions throughout as to the best way to achieve our wishes and is absolutely customer-focused. As well, he is a nice chap to have on site, trustworthy, personable and dependable. We have further significant work needed on our property over the coming months and will have no hesitation in giving him the first chance of doing this work because of his dependability and the high level of finish of everything he has done for us. We could not have a better or more trustworthy tradesman."

    "Mark has done an excellent job on our project, converting a garage into a multi-purpose space for office, study, library and gym. The project grew considerably as only after the job had started did we fully realise the potential of this space and wanted an optimal outcome. Mark rose to the challenge magnificently and quickly adapted to our evolving thoughts and added very useful suggestions of his own. Mark was also price-conscious having regard to achieving good results and presenting a… variety of options for us to choose from. When on site he worked diligently and with a high standard of professionalism. His attention to detail and finishing was outstanding and he thought ahead in a way that few tradespeople we have engaged over the years have done. He was excellent at liaising with and scheduling the other trades necessary to bring the job to conclusion. After he finished the job he kindly left his scaffolding on site so that we could paint the highest reaches of the new frontage.     You can trust Mark for any job, as well as the building work he patched \"perfectly\" our original wooden floor which we wanted to polish as well as scouring and getting made fantastic rimu kick boards and shelves. Which really made the kitchen.

    "When we started the project we wanted a qualified builder who will build to the standard and consent and who is not cheap, but reasonably priced. We were quoted 2 weeks to do the job and the price was reasonable, but it took more than 2 years to complete the job! He seldom turns up on the day and time which he says he will and there is almost always a more important job elsewhere. His workmanship started off very good, then became pretty poor towards the end of the project with me having to… finish off things which he should have done. A critical structural part, a nib wall, which is required by the building code was not put in place before the cladding was put on. He had to come back and break down the finished off painted wall to build the nib wall under the framing. The weatherboards were down to the ground even though the standard says it should be 50mm above ground. Staircase hand rails were put at the wrong height and failed inspection. He also used the cheapest handrail brackets, which did not even fit properly on the frame which it was mounted on. These are things which an experienced and registered builder should know about and not ignore. We had a disagreement about the position of a window, because it would be easier for the builder to offset it to the side rather than put it in the center as per the plan which the quote was based on. We agreed before the onset of the project that the builder will arrange all the necessary inspections and were told during the project that everything was fine with the inspections, only to find out that he never actually arranged ANY inspections and we ended up having to explain to the city council why inspections were never done. And arranging inspection from there onward became my problem and I did not have time for it. And then it looked particularly bad to the inspector that the cladding was closed up, concealing the fact that there was no nib wall behind it, before any inspections were done. We have always paid the invoices on the agreed time. He purposely withheld, against regulations, the electrical compliance certificate and other critical information which I needed for my CCC application, to try to force me to make final payment before the CCC was issued. He then also puts unnecessary comments and threats on the last invoice about payment being overdue when it is still within the agreed payment time, and that after it took more than 2 years to do the job. The delay on the final payment was due to his inability to finish the project within a reasonable time. Thank heavens the nightmare is finally over.

    When he puts his mind to it, he does an excellent job, and he does not overcharge you beyond the quote. It is all the other negatives listed above which ruins the whole experience. I will never use Mark again and will certainly not recommend him. It is a pity because he certainly has the building skills.    "

    "Thanks for the comments Dawie, but please remember that you were suppost to supply the doors and window, but did not and very hard to get those made 3 weeks prior to Christmas. The council was contacted and with being so busy i did not follow thru, problems were addressed at no cost to you and code of compliance has now been issued. I try to keep my clients happy, but some are easier than others"

    "Bermac built the extension on our Kindergarten over the Christmas break 2008/2009. The process of us getting the sufficient funding for the project created enormous additional work for Mark Berry who always produced quotes at a moments notice without question in the year leading up to our final build.
    We didnt get our building consent until 23rd December but Mark stuck by us and was on the job the next day delivering to spec our much awaited extension.

Most of these cowboys didnt turn up, some of them refused to do small jobs, and most of them charged the Earth. Mary Berrys company (Bermac Ltd) is, however, quite a different story. He turns up when he says he will, he charges a reasonable price, and he doesnt mind doing jobs of any size; big or small. Moreover, hes a very personable guy with a great team behind him.     New gutter did not capture rainwater due to lack of overhang.
    Left site with Gutter not even glued together.

    Repairs not completed satisfactory to client.
    Intimidation for payment, when job not completed.
