The job was to replace 44 piles that were approximately 80 years old, and in various stages of decay.

From the outset, Shane was absolutely great to deal with.

He travelled from Auckland to Waiheke by ferry. There he inspected my situation and provided a very fair and reasonable quote soon after.

At the inspection stage he talked me through the various options and what was required in terms of dealing with… Auckland Council.

The job required council consent (which I gained), and Shane took care of everything after that.

He liaised with my architect, organised all council inspections and sign-offs, and co-ordinated the concrete supplier. For a homeowner, that level of service (and lack of worry) was gold.

He communicated exceptionally well. I can be a fussy bugger but Shane answered all my questions and queries with patience, respect and clarity.

My architect added three additional (necessary) small piles to the plan, post-quote. However, Shane stuck to the original price.

He even discovered another rotten pile not on the plan and replaced it for no cost. And the team also put in extra bracing.

There were no hidden extras or surprises in the final invoice. Travel to Waiheke, all materials and labour: everything was figured in at the quote stage.

As for the work, I had heard Shane and his team were hard-working, but I was blown away by their dedication and skill.

Shane and the boys turned up at 7am every morning. They dug 450mm deep holes (and a couple of 900mm holes, one my architect was adamant was impossible) by hand. This was in hard, dry clay soil in a confined space.

The whole team worked to schedule, there was absolutely no mucking around. No extended smoko breaks or any of that bull****. It was all about getting the job done. A real precision operation.

Inside, there were no cracks in the walls or plaster. And I was able to live in the house for the four days they were there. No moving out.

My house foundations are now super-solid. And are right up to the Building Code. They'll outlast me.

Here’s the thing: when you realise (or suspect) your house may need a repile, you get a bit of a shock. I did.

If you’re not a builder, it’s an unknown world. But the best thing to do is face up to it and deal with it. If you don’t, the problem will likely only get worse.

My advice to anyone would be: call Shane first.

He’s extremely honest, reliable and knowledgable. Plus he has the proven ability to deliver results, time after time.

When you’re getting work like this done on your house, you want to know the guys doing it are at the top of their game. That’s Shane and his boys.

They do this day in, day out. They're match-fit; they know the ropes; have been seen all kinds of situations; and have the relationships with the councils and suppliers.

I would recommend Shane and his crew to anyone. They’re the real deal. Honest, respectful and dedicated tradesmen who keep their word and do a very skilled job at a fair price.

They really do set the standard for tradesmen.
