"I wish I had seen all the bad feed back on here. My elderly mother engaged their services and is now out of pocket for over $10,000.
We had to engage another company to clean up the mess and they knew of these bandits.
Sam took advantage of an elderly person and scammed her.
Sam and associates should be behind bars.

"Please do not use this company. We have been quoted between $12,000 and $33,000 to repair the illegal (works don't comply with the building code) and sub-standard works they carried out. We also had to take trespass notices out against employees. If you've already signed a contract with them start arranging for a building report ASAP... Happy to provide a building report to substantiate the above. "

As a supplier to Compass Roofing when their truck needed 2 new tyres, then despite repeated promises to pay and 16 months latter still havent, you shouldnt trust this business particularly Jess Brechelt and Sam Spence....their word isnt worth s#!t unfortunately. If you think my comments are sour the reviews on these guys on Nocowboys sums them up. DO NOT TRUST!!!!

"We had no issues with these guys. We had them do a full re-roof on our house. The work was held up by the terrible weather we have had in Auckland recently so the scaffolding and roofing supplies were on site for some time before they could begin but once the weather cleared the job was done and the scaffolding down in 2 days total. The guys worked quickly and the new roof looks great. We were also offered a discount due to the amount of time the scaffolding was up for.

I had to chase them for updates on the schedule a few times but they always replied within the day."

"I contracted Compass Roofing (Caspian Engineering) to remove an old asbestos roof, extend the eave and roof line 400mm from the house to give the house a better look and proper drip line, and replace the roof with new long run to match another part of the roof we had already had replaced a couple years ago. The job also required the replacement of an internal gutter with copper spouting and new copper downpipes.
The downpipes needed to diverted into the storm water system and required a core drill through the foundation and into an existing sump.

They did a great job, and ended up replacing several other flashings to ensure the house was water tight.

They were let down by their spouting contractor, and in the end they came back and fitted the final downpipes and completed the core drill hole into the sump, rather than wait for the sub contractor to turn up.

We had recently put new garden beds in with extensive plantings, and I asked them to be careful around the plants with the scaffold and working area, which they were.

We did have an accident on site with a knee through a window, but they were quick to have this repaired without any fuss.

Over all the job looks great, was delivered slightly late, due to the sub contractor, but was on quote.

I would use these guys again.

Due to Compass Roofing threatening me with legal action I am removing an inflammatory statement in my post. I did not have a good experience with this company and can not in good conscience recommend them.
    Robyn responded:
"In defence of our Compass crew, this particular job was not one of the most popular colours there for we had to wait on coil, profile the same, so straight off the cuff that holds things up. It is always a bit tricky working around other tradespeople, times schedules, which everyone is trying their best to stick to, we were having to work around a sparky, when he would be their etc. There was a small snag, which we responded to very quickly. Notes on computer have been checked, Heather was notified 4th December that there was a delay, which happens in many industries, so I’m not sure where no communication comes from. The quality rating is an insult, we have had some crazy rain and storms over the Christmas period, not once has Compass received a call from Heather."

"We had our roof replaced by Compass Roofing in August. Work was fine and we were pleased with it. However, the men threw something on our washing line and damaged it. Although the line had a bit of damage before that, it was useable and we had used it for 2-3 years with no problems. We made the mistake of paying in full for the job - $15k - before they replaced the line. We have only just received a replacement line - 4 months later, this after many emails to the company. Finally Gene was sent out to assess the damage. After another 3 weeks wait, I emailed again and received an email saying that as the line was damaged previously, he did not think they were liable. The washing line had completely collapsed and was unusable. Obviously Gene does not hang washing out, because he did not know that you could not use it in the state it was in. He hung up on me 2x. Had to get Robyn in their office to get the replacement line, which only cost $130 - she was excellent - all sorted in one day, compared to the 4 months of trying to get men to do it. For the sake of $130, I will never use them again. I have a rental that needs a new roof, I will not use them, neither will I ever recommend them to anyone I know.

Also be careful of the little crescent shaped metal things that are left on the ground after the job - my daughter had to get 3 new tyres on her car and they stuck in the tyres and gave them slow leaks.
    Compass Roofing LTD responded:
"First and foremost please note this post starts with staying Nellie is happy with her roof. Yes we were aware something had been dropped on line and damaged it further. Sam asked Robyn to ring Nellie, which she did, and at this time Nellie didn’t think it was that bad. Nellie phoned us back quite some time later (possibly 3-4 weeks). Gene wanted to have a look before purchasing a clothesline, firstly so we could get “like for like”, and secondly that the diameter of the pole would fit into the sleeve in ground. Nellie rang Gene in response to an email, after a brief discussion, Gene explained to Nellie that he would call her back, as he had two crews of men awaiting instruction for the day, Nellie was unhappy with this and started being irrational, the conversation heading nowhere at this stage, Gene ended the call. Nellie rang the office spoke to Robyn, she said she was happy to contribute toward line. Robyn rang and emailed Nellie on more than one occasion letting her know she would get clothesline but had no reply. Robyn then went and purchased a “like for like” clothes line. Nellie was given the receipt so that if she wanted to get something different the option was available for her to exchange. It would seem there is very little said about the roofing job as it was done within a very good timeframe and a quality job."

"I contacted Compass Roofing with an urgent roof job and they saved the day after we were let down by another roofing company. I was provided with a detailed quote, great communication, and immediate service. The guys were out on site within a couple of hours to install the roof and the Director of the company also visited and took the time to check everything was done properly so it was obvious they cared about the job. Overall they made it very easy for me and provided a personal and friendly service. I would definitely recommend them."

"I really cant relate to the negative comments here. I have no complaints and would definitely recommend.
Work was delayed due to really wet couple weeks which I have no issue with.... workers safety must come first. We needed a new roof on one of our rentals....the guys were awesome workers with a great foreman on the job. There was one part of the guttering above the doorway that had come away at the joint so water always poured out .... today when it rained I wondered why the water wasnt pouring down from that joint ... when I looked up the joint was fixed....the compass guys must of fixed it while they were up there! It would have only take a minute to seal but they didnt HAVE to do that..... MUCH appreciated guys, its little things like that count alot! Thankyou will definitely use again on the next project that needs a roof!!

"We engaged compass 8 weeks ago to carry out re-roof on 2 of our rentals, after looking at bad feedback we were hesitant but still went ahead as Compass came referred and recommended, the roofing project went very well and quickly despite poor weather delaying start dates, but will defiantly use this crowd again. Warren who we doubt with was very helpful in recommendations of re-pitching low pitched area of roof and very communicative.

"I simply wished some of the these other ratings were posted before we hired Compass Roofing. Similar story to others. We too should have raised alarm bells when they consistently failed to clarify their scope or amend the contract, and the emails and documents were riddled with spelling errors etc.

Since hiring them and agreeing to a programme the builder found it difficult to get them back on site to complete the works as per the consented plans. They didn't complete the works as per the consented plans and instead of claiming a variation and doing the work they simply walked off site until we found another sub contractor to complete the water proofing works. This led to delays and additional costs to the project to provide utilities, scaffolding, tarpaulins etc. We also received complaints from the neighbours for their labourers behaviour while they were on site.

After agreeing to hold some cash until works was completed as per consented plans they repeatedly failed to return, after several attempts to get hold of them, they then changed their minds and claimed a variation to come back. When we tried to come to an arrangement for them to complete the works, as per the consented plans and so we could get council sign off, they wanted to go to small claims to resolve the issue. They failed to attend all of the small claim hearings to gain resolution and instead threatened our property to the point where the family felt threatened and the police were contacted. Small claims has since resolved the issues and our dis agreements however (not entirely in my favour) and Compass have yet to pay the final decision.

We were obviously not an outlier as the other reviews have had similar experiences. Compass roofing simply under delivered with programme, customer service and price. I cannot recommend enough to hire a roofer that is a member of the roofing association of NZ website.
    Robyn responded:
"Firstly thank you for this post. Your job was done on time and on schedule( it did not help that you were over in Spain at the time of the project and mention you were project managing this job, over in Spain doing project managing is quite impression I must say on vacation).. The works were carried out to E2 roofing standard/ as per contract and on our contract did not mention the gutter flashings or membrane work as the plans sent did not speculate this detail( as this was brought up in the small claims court case you pursued not compass) hence the decision was in Compass Favour…. You mention I have not paid the small amount of $200.00 back order by the courts, for over payment, I did tell you this will be paid in the same time you took to pay me, like 9 weeks… When we found that there was eave flashings and membrane works it was very hard to reach you over in Spain, project managing your renovation, to advise of this and it would be a variation to our contract. So this is where this issue popped up.. Compass roofing very quickly gave and assisted the builder a great membrane guy to do this job urgently which it was carried, also in fact your great project managing skills only had one builder doing your project, I do re-call Compass pulling over 2 close friends(builders) to assist your builder whilst you are project managing in Spain on vacation… Compass were time delayed due to builder delays hence getting 2 builder friends over to assist. Compass made many trips back to assist with planning and so forth, which we did not mind as we were local to the area. Compass turned up to 1 of 2 court case, 2nd time Compass attendance was not required as our lawyers advised it was a clear cut case, you send plans, we price you accept, it was clearly not on plans we priced from nor on our contract, these items appeared on consented plans and at the time you were on vacation and could not be reached…I also mentioned to you after your return from you vacation that it was not quoted for, after meetings at our office, you still wanted this work done for no cost…. When it was very clear it was not on plans we priced off. The job was carried out with the highest level of Quality and a photo will be on our web page of this label No cowboys for all to view. I also add that there were no threats made towards anyone, and that we did not hear from any police officer re any threats( so there can’t of been any threats made as you speculate on this site) there was demand letter sent over the overdue amount to pay stating several factors Mr cooper was in breach of and the materials were still owned by compass roofing… I again thank you for this post and suggest in future not to post inflammatory comments on public media when you fail to mention how helpful we were and the great job you received and much more great works to assist the project to run smoothly as mention some facts above."

"USE THIS COMPANY AT THRE PERIL OF YOUR DOLLARS. We were supposed to have our roof and gutters replaced in April 2014 by compass. Sam the business owner came along to quote us, he seemed pleasant and at this stage answered our phone calls. The price wasn't the cheapest but we liked Sam so we went ahead with the job. When we received the quote it was practically illiterate we should have known then. The first thing compass did a day after accepting the quote and weeks before starting the job was to put an advertising board by the mailbox without even asking.

The job was very average .

However they left us without gutters for 5 weeks during which time it poured with rain causing significant flooding and cost to us in clean up. According to compass the delay was a supplier problem. Sure but 5 weeks? I just don't buy that. They new the job they had to do at the outset and had weeks before starting the job, why did they not have the gutters on order at the start. It transpired that Sam offered us free downpipe replacement or the inconvenience. Very nice we thought. Now 17 months later over hundred attempts at contacting Sam. We have given up and now write this review. Our advice to anyone using this company that even if you think you compass have good job get an expert not from compass to check it for you because chances are the job is faulty. Really poor show.

"Took Compass Roofing to tribunal for bad workmanship. Not only was it bad work but they also threatened us. We had an independent builders report carried out which came back as shoddy workmanship, etc. We had to get a solicitor because of the threats we were receiving. We won the tribunal case. Compass Roofing broke the Consumers Guarantee Act 1993 and the Fair Trading Act 1996. The company was ordered to pay us approx $13,000 by the 15 October 2015. They have paid us. Our roof still leaks even though we have paid the asking price in full. One of the threats we received via our solicitor:"If amount is not paid in 7 days I will remove the roof, I don't think they want this in this weather, the stress and so on, I' not ****ing around over 5k or 50k that's what happens when a bill isn't paid my style that's the way I conduct business, end of story, court wil drag on and on and cost your clients more money and stress, no skin off my nose. I own several companies and can just close one and move on if I wanted to. None the less the roof is dust if payment is not in account, i will ensure I pick a real wet day to remove. Your clients may call the police but by that time the roof would have been removed, the choice is yours."We went to the police over the threats. Being in my seventies I do not need this. We have had to pay Compass Roofing, solicitors and building inspector fees.PLEASE BE AWARE OF THIS COMPANY. We made our first comment on the 5 May 2015. This may be going to the high court now. Will keep you informed as to what will happen in the next few months."

"Beware of this company as it quotes lower prices but then rips you off. Have had a very bad experience with getting our roof changed by them. The job was not completed on time & now we're having major issues with moisture on the ceiling. The company doesn't seem to take it's warranty promise seriously."
    Sam responded:
"Have you had an independent report….? If not I suggest you seek one, as the moisture issue is due to ceiling cavity and house being old… Have you consider a HRV system or some form of ventilation system…? Also if I was agree to come out to install ventilation and the issue is sorted, you agree to pay are real pricey invoice…. Please remove this no cowboys post, and by all means put it back up there if this issue is not resolved or a bad roofing report has come back from an independent consultant."
