"Big renovation job worth 3/4 Million dollars, estimated to be done in 6 months, still going 2.5 years later.
Structural build was good, finishing is appalling.

Holes in insulation, insulation falling out, leak in newly reclad wall, finishing lines badly cut, horrible joins, plenty of stuff done badly and then patched up poorly (window sills not cut to size etc), painters never show up leading to water damage to new windows and doors, measures not taken right, walls aren't plum, etc.
They start something somewhere, drop tools to move on to something else, and you later find out they never finished anything completely. Some balustrade railings aren't fixed, some window frames had only a couple of screws holding them in place, screws left protruding in the side of frames and posts, etc...

Early on assured us that any damage done they would "make good", only to be told later that all the damage to the walls after putting in new windows would not be fixed because we were doing the painting ourselves, leaving us with gaping holes and lots of damage to the GIB around the window frames.

They damaged a number of things on site which they have still not replaced or reimbursed us for, one of which being an outdoor table they used as scaffolding when one of their guys went right through it.

There's no follow through after site meetings, lots of promises never kept, hardly any visits on site to check the quality of their build.

Communication is very poor, with no follow ups, and quite rude.

Horrible amount of waste - I have picked up entire boxes of stainless screws and nails left in the garden, never picked up.

When they "refund" you things they have overcharged, they put it on the next bill so you end up still having paid both GST and their builders margins.

Many discrepancies in their hidden P+G margins and builders margins.

They obfuscate the claims, making it hard to track what expenses are for and where they come from.

They undertook work before letting us know and without our approval, and we ended up with surprise bills on a couple of occasions despite us letting them know that they couldn't do that, everything having to be pre-approved.

Once they have you locked in, they send their crews elsewhere on other jobs, delaying your build indefinitely.

For a team that used to have such high ratings, their quality has dropped considerably - at about the time they expanded and started using teams of subbies and managing them, poorly.

Highly unrecommended. Save yourself the nightmare and go with anyone else.

Under "cowboys" in the dictionary, DRD should feature prominently.

"Don't be fooled by the glossy brochure and the glowing five-year-old testimonials. I suffered an incredibly unprofessional, unpleasant and ultimately unsatisfactory experience from start to finish at the hands of DRD Builders and its director Jesse Dyson.

I approached DRD Builders in November, asking if they could undertake some repairs and replacement of rotten weatherboards on the east face of my house. They provided a tender just shy of $8,000 (plus $4,000 for scaffolding, which I arranged separately due to other works planned for the same time) which I accepted. They initially said they could start at my convenience, but when I accepted the quote, they said the earliest they could begin was the end of February. I arranged scaffolding and repainting for the last week of February, only to then be told they could now only begin on 9 March. They eventually turned up to begin work on 13 March, following my enquiry on the evening of 9 March asking when they planned to begin.

Two young guys did two days' work and then vanished. After four days, I asked if the job was complete and repainting could begin and I was told by the "contracts manager" Tim Fransen that indeed it was and he thought I had been told. However, when my painter came to finish up, it quickly became apparent that the job had not been completed to any acceptable standard. I raised this with Tim, asking him to meet me on site to explain his QA check (a specific item of the tender) and why he thought the work was acceptable. He didn't have time (apparently), but Jesse did call by unannounced in my absence, was rude to my wife when I would have expected an abject apology, and left in a huff having observed the clear deficiencies for himself. I subsequently received an email from him, from which I quote below. My wife was shocked at the abusive tone of his communication, particularly given the evident failings of his operation:

"You also clearly have demonstrated you have no idea what a good product is or how the process works, so I won’t waste my time explaining that either as it will certainly fall on deaf ears as clearly you know best, The guys will be there tomorrow to finish up and put tidy up the bits and pieces as outlined."

Now you know what to expect if you have the misfortune of having to deal with Mr Dyson. Call him out on his unacceptably poor standard of work and expect abuse in return. I may not know what good work is, but I know what it's not, and it's not a window glued shut, holes smashed in external weatherboards and left open to the elements, and nails from a nail gun left protruding from splintered and chipped finished surfaces. But apparently Jesse thought it was unreasonable of me to mention these to him when he considered the job was done well enough for his standards. If these are the issues we can see (with, as he says, no idea what a good job is), and the issues his workmen leave the site with and his QA check passes, then I don't like to think about the issues that have been glossed over and gone unnoticed.

Following my complaint and his visit, Jesse sent his workers back for another day where they addressed at least the visible signs of the issues that had been raised. I do not believe a subsequent check was made of the work done on the second attempt. The protruding nails were removed from the splintered board, but the damage remained. Jesse then sent his bill: $7,300 for 35 man-hours of labour, plus 15 man-hours of remedial work (generously counted). (Materials were supplied, so deducted from the original tender.)

Further, in the first heavy rain post-job, we had water streaming down the inside of the wall below the area of major work (the one originally left open to the elements). A further call to Jesse and his guys turned up again, slapped on some silicone and called it good. At least for one season. No apology, instead the incredible suggestion that this was unrelated to the job.

In addition to Jesse's own inexcusable rudeness and lack of professionalism, also his workers behaved unprofessionally. They spent almost as long taking turns on our toilet and popping off site to pick up bits and pieces that they didn't think to bring with them to the job as they spent working on site, and they left the site -- our home -- strewn with rubbish for us to tidy up, including their drinks cans and lunch wrappings and even discarded tools. They borrowed tools that they lacked from other tradesmen on site and returned them dirty, then having the cheek to ask if they could have more so they wouldn't have to clean the first ones. Their own tools were left abandoned, stuck in the dirt of the garden overnight.

I don't know how Jesse Dyson and Hadleigh de Reus used to operate, but it is clear that their business is no longer what it once was, or else this job was simply too small for them to accord it proper care, in which case they could do everyone a favour by not taking it on. After this experience, I would not use them again. The other tradesmen who witnessed their work firsthand on site would also not recommend them. Approach at your own risk.

    Hadleigh responded:
"DRD Builders Limited does not accept this customer’s feedback is accurate or fair. DRD Builders Limited are disappointed to see that this customer has chosen to publically post this unwarranted criticism when we have attempted to resolve this customer’s concerns directly. DRD Builders prides itself on consistently meeting high standards of workmanship and if something we have done is not right we put it right. "

"I contracted DRD Builders to construct a Butynol roof under a building consent. They were quick to quote and professional. The job was done on time and they were happy to quote/work on additional jobs, like repairing our deck, while they were building the roof. DRD Builders interacted with the council and arranged all the inspections, etc making the project go smoothly.

It was a pleasant experience dealing with them and for any future projects, I'll consider them first."

"Once again, Jesse, Hadleigh and the boys did a marvellous job. On time; tidy; worked with us on deviations from planned activity; re-estimated without issue; and delivered a result we are very pleased with."

"Fabulous builders. I wouldn't have anyone else. We have used DRD builders twice in the past few years- for a large landscaping project, and a basement conversion (involving a new internal access staircase). Jesse and Hadleigh and their team are prompt, professional, reliable and manage both the project and communication with us really well. Their work is of a high standard. "

"I was required to complete a full reclad of my 3 story house to obtain Council code compliance. I contacted a number of builders to obtain a quote. Jesse came round to view the property and submitted a very competitive quote and was easy to deal with. I selected them without hesitation.

The job itself turned into a bigger task when they took the existing cladding off. Hadleigh managed the job from start to finish and was amazing. He made me feel at ease, kept me informed the entire way, offered solutions for challenges uncovered and delivered an amazing result. He even offered to, then took down and disposed of a large dead tree in his own time, at no cost.

I've now achieved code compliance, have an amazing looking house and have achieved a sale in no time at all. I couldn't have achieved this without the help of Hadleigh, Jesse and their team.

I would have absolutely no hesitations in recommending DRD for any job, large or small. If I have any further need of a builder, I know exactly who I'll be contacting!
