"Do not use this company. A large area of the gate rotted after just a few years and he then wanted $1000 to repair it again. The website says: quality, works of art, will last many years, will repair any damage etc etc.. what a load of BS. Be warned do not waste your money, do not buy from this company. "

"I used Hampton Gates for a simple entrance gate. I was quoted 2 weeks wait, and it took 3 with no apology
even though we were promised by a certain date.

After 2 months it started to warp and panels opened up.
Bad quality workmanship. Abuse from the owner when confronted about this.
I was told it was my fault for painting it a dark/med colour and for bogging up the holes in the paneling
    that I could see through.
I would not recommend. Stay clear.

"Our gate has to be the worse piece of workmanship we have EVER seen, the owner was the most difficult person to deal with- Very aggressive and threatening personality- delayed delivery with all the excuses in the world. Painted gloss on one side /matt on the other- cheap hardware- had been up 2 weeks when the paint started to fall off, it warped so couldn't be opened easily.
    Do not use this company.

"This guy is an absolute joke and I can't believe he is still allowed to trade after ripping so many families off. He has had over 20 court hearings and he is still allowed to trade, this is insane, what's the point in the justice system when they do nothing. "

"All of the above. Ordered a number of fence panels made from macro. He seems a reasonable and knowledgeble chap, but turns out he can make jack s..t. Took a year to get the panels after countless emails. I asked hime to measure them up which he did, but of the 12 panels delivered only 3 were the right size. They were not square and poorly finished. Not what I was expecting. So looks like it is to court I must go to get my money back.

"We used this company to build a gate for us. The quote said 4 to 6 weeks. As per the other people nothing hapepned on time, After almost 2 years now we have an almost finished gate that does not slide properly. I would never use this company again or recommend this company to anyone. Communication is either poor, non existent or agressive. Workmanship is poor and value for money is zero. "

"Stay away from this company. I ordered a custom set of gates and panels in May 2010 and didn\'t receive photos (with request for payment of balance) until August 2010. The workmanship and stability of design, was terrible, the design was not what we ordered and after informing Mr Bird of these things he became very aggressive and refuted our consumer right to cancel the contract and refund our deposit. We had a trespass order issued, a complaint laid with the police against abusive and threatening behaviour. We received around 45 emails in total from this man over the year we dealt with him, most threatening and defamatory in nature.

We took him to Disputes and received a ruling in our favour for a breach of Sale of Goods act, section 15. We had to use the court bailiffs to recover our ruling amount.

There are many other reputable companies out there who are ethical and good business people, save yourself the stress and money and avoid this company.

"Hampton gates is a scam. The mode of operation is a quote, then you must pay 50% up front. To get any action the \"contract\" requires the
bulk of the remainder. After that good luck with getting anything done.
I got half a fence, very poorly constructed, then an email asking for
even more money. On realising that the work would never be completed successfully, I contacted other companies, who are aware of this operator, and put me in touch with many who have had similar experiences. I am at the stage of having a ruling in my favour by the

disputes tribunal - they would have given me more than I asked for.

Others with positive rulings tell me I will need to send in the baliffs to actually collect my compensation. Hampton gates has been barred from operating on trademe, and the law is finally catching up with them in other spheres.

Here is an update: after a positve ruling in my favour( 31 August 2011), Steve Bird appealed the decision (appeal dimissed 3 February 2012), then he applied for a hearing for a rehearing (dismissed 10 July 2012). Over the last two years he has been taken to the disputes tribunal 14 times. So his mode of operation really is to take your money, and make you fight to get it back.
