45%"We had our house replied a couple of years ago but am writing my review now as further renovations to our property highlighted the actual quality of the job completed.
When we were quoted for our job it was to include leveling to the floors as well as repiling. We had native timber floors and we wanted to preserve this feature incase we ever wanted to have them uncarpeted. Therefore we opted for Rob and his team to trench under the house something that is more difficult for sure but… something we expected them to be experts at given they suggested it as an option as they are repling experts after all? We were also expecting (as was discussed) that this trenching would create a crawl space and airflow under the house.

During the project I noted my concerns with Rob that the floors seemed to be actually more unleveled in places and one room in particular which we were basically repiling the house for, showed no signs of improvement to the slope of the floors. At this point he informs us that the floorboards were bowed and will never be able to be levelled. This was incredibility frustrating as was the whole point of getting the house repilied and is something he should of been able to tell us during quoting process. Our expectations were not managed at all and we felt we paid for something that made no difference to our house. However we were happy that it had be repiled to make it safe going forward.
Fast forward to this year when we undertook substantial renovations and what did we discover.... on one-side of the house piles were wobbly, some not even supporting/touching the floor bearers. But worse than that one part of the house had no piles at all! Piles that were listed as being installed and submitted to the council in consent documents were non existent. There was no explanation given as to how or why this happened from Rob.
Rob was given the opportunity to fix some of the piles and actually put some piles in but others were fixed by our builder to not hold up our project. Some of the costs Rob agreed with our builder to cover (not actually sure if he actually did or not but the amount wasn't actually a lot and in my view given the trouble it caused). I would have thought he would have offered additional compensation to cover the excavation work to remove the dirt (to actually create the crawl space) and to reinsulate the floors.
So I would not recommend this company to repile by method of trenching as there is no way of inspecting the work completed. I did appreciate Rob's actions to rectify the situation when brought to his attention by myself but don't ever feel a customer should have been put in this situation in the first place.Robert van Driel responded:"Thank you Lizzy for your rating and comment. I did compensate your builder for his work in replacing some of the piles. I did so even though I was not afforded the opportunity to do it myself. I further more was on site and present immediately to both check and provide immediate advice. The fact of the matter was that the huge renovations that took place involved removing and disposing of all floors inside house. By doing so, the earth levels needed to be dropped in accordance to NZ building code. It meant that all A grades Piles were therefore undermined and needed replacement regardless. I agree a small portion were not dug to correct depth, and that has been amended with my crew being given direct consultation and corrective measures including myself and my foreman cliquing work personally. I can assure my loyal clientele that this event was a one off, and will never occur again. 100%"We sought out Robert to put us on the right track to resolve our subsidence issues where the front of our house was sinking and to also fix our very uneven lounge floor as a result. Robert showed up exactly when he said he would and spent time going around pointing out many factors in the equation and provided us a quote and instructions on our part for drainage issues to resolve. We contacted them on an urgent basis in April 2016 after our builder informed us that the southwest corner of our house had sunk approximately 90mm. This news came to us two weeks into a financed and consented exterior renovation, which included replacing our cladding, doors and windows.
Our builder explained that if we didn't relevel the house before the new cladding (uPVC weather boards) was… installed, the cladding would end up at an odd angle, and, furthermore, we would risk damaging our new windows and doors if the house was releveled after they were installed. In short, we had no option but to precede urgently with releveling.

We sought the advice of two repiling companies. The first company proposed a less comprehensive and less costly solution but wanted to tear out our floors and refused to give a warranty on their work. When I explained that I also wanted to make sure our Council approved their work, I was told, "good luck with that".
A Grade offered us a very different and very comprehensive (wholistic) solution, which included fully repiling our house and underpinning our partial ring foundation to a depth of over 2m.
Robert also explained that the most likely cause of our house continuing to slip (it was repiled in 2012 by a prior owner) was poor drainage and gave us excellent suggestions on what we would need to do to resolve the drainage issues - all of which were later confirmed by our plumber/drain layer.
Robert was always very upfront about the cost. He warrants his work, and doesn't want to redo work he's already done, so he isn't going to offer a cheap solution that he knows won't survive the warranty period. Furthermore, Robert understood that it was important to us to get Council approval and offered to simplify the process by coordinating the architect and engineer. He also responded directly to Council (KCDC) inquiries as necessary, and we ultimately received a Certificate of Acceptance for the work.
In addition to providing quality foundation work, offering quality drainage advice, and helping to obtain Council approval, A Grade also added value (at no additional cost to us) by: protecting my plants by digging them out and moving them away from the work site; patching a water leak from a pipe I had asked our plumber to disconnect, and which I assured A Grade's team had been disconnected, but, in fact, wasn't; adjusting one of our gutters (moved the dropper) to help improve drainage; and building a special shovel over 2m long to hand dig the holes for underpinning around our house when they discovered that the auger was not suitable with our sandy soil.Rating by: Maria | Rating posted: 7th Dec, 2016 | Contact: Robert van Driel | Job date: May, 2016Maria•7th Dec, 2016•More details…

98%"Rob undertook foundation repair on my house and was professional throughout including dealing nicely with my tenants. The 1950s house on peat was subsiding badly at one end due to its original piles not reaching solid ground that he found to be about 2 metres down, and to chronic stormwater drain leaks. Rob recommended underpinning in 4 or so places under the concrete perimeter so it would get support from solid ground (and I believe if my eyes observe right he built the concrete perimeter up a… bit at the bad end while the house was jacked up a little), and replaced or repaired several piles that had either moved or been badly installed creating slumps or waves in the floor. He also sorted out doors that had been previously altered to fit with warping frames at no extra charge. The job was completed in a few days and it has taken the house from having a falling down decrepit feel to now feeling like its construction is good quality - amazing the emotional boost a flat floor gives atop the resale and capital gain side of it. Rob came in with the final bill exactly as quoted at approx $16,000. I had got a couple of other quotes but the people lacked Robs qualifications and seemed gung ho or clueless while Rob could explain the problem and best solution. 83%"Repiled a small older house for us. Rob warned us about the worst-case scenario for a house interior during repiling, but the results were the best (no internal damage/changes at all). Our only issue with the repiling was that the work was delayed for a month past the scheduled start date due to poor weather impacting other jobs. Cheerful and good communication overall - we found him excellent via email, not so good about answering the phone.
When it came to work that wasn't the repiling,… it didn't go as smoothly. We received a detailed estimate for repiling but only a verbal estimate for other building work we specifically asked about. Unfortunately, other workers subcontracting to Rob weren't as reliably good - a plumber who charged us $350 for a simple sink mixer, an electrician never showed up, etc. So I recommend A Grade Building & Repiling specifically for repiling and building.

It is company policy during working hours to leave cell phones in truck if we are working on a roof for obvious safety reasons. Kitchen mixer costs that much when the durability factor comes to play. A certified builder must afford a ten warranty on all workmanship and materials. Cheap kitchen mixers just don't make the grade. My electricians father in law passed away the night before and did not answer phone for a week. This was mentioned to client but perhaps it being more than a year ago work was completed, must have been forgotten. 100%"This is the first house I have bought in New Zealand and therefore the first tradesmen I have used and I firmly believe you get what you pay for! in a good way....I did quite a bit of research online before employing Robert and used this site, reading previous feedback and comments, before making my decision. I did get three quotes for the work, which was the complete replacement of the piles on the house, and whilst Robert\'s was the most expensive, like I said before, I am a firm believer of… you have to pay for quality workmanship. The overall communication and professionalism afforded to me by Robert, and all of his team, were nothing but 100% all the way through. Whilst everything did not go to plan, because of the weather and unforeseen problems (i.e. repiling in bone dry sand is not easy) Robert explained everything to me and we agreed on the best ways forward and the job got done. The team cut through a foot thick concrete wall and trenched underneath our 80 year old house to replace the almost completely rotten original piles. They worked within very limited space and in horrible weather conditions, digging out hard clay and eventually rock. The first was a really thorough look and rough price on an advertised dated property. This house needed more work than we had anticipated, and Robert was able to give us a rough guide as to the amount we would be looking at to get it up to scratch. He arrived on the day we rang him and had the report to us within two hours of seeing the property, as tender was due in days. With his information on hand we realised this… house almost needed to be rebuilt from the ground up - NOT what was being offered! Without his friendly up front info we could have been up for a nasty shock!
The second inspection was again conducted on the day I called him and the report was in that night - couldnt ask for better service!

This was a new Garage Build of 80 square metres, included demolition of old garage, some fencing, concrete foundations and erecting all the walls, doors and windows, and exterior corrugate steel cladding and roofing, (with no water leaks). Rob allowed me to deal direct with other Vendors and pay them independantly *(eg. plumber, electrician, & other material suppliers) >which is a cost saving to me). Quoting for the job was a bit vague, and… Invoicing was prompt but lacked the detail i expected (ie. detailed list of materials used with unit pricing). Overall very happy with the work. Rob did what the plans called for and more. Materials used were top quality, which resulted in a very solidly built garage. A-Grade Builders turned up on time everytime and some things were completed faster than expeceted. They are also very curtious to neighbours, tidy up all the mess, remove the rubbish, easily contactible and communication regularly. The team were professional, punctual & respectful. They worked extremely hard in all weathers to get the job done for us. We had a family emergency while the guys were onsite and were able to leave town knowing the job would still be done and done well. The communication was great & the workmanship excellent.
