"We engaged bob and his team to completely renovate our house. This was our rental property for few years and we wanted to have it completely renovated before we moved in. The work involved renovating the bathroom, putting up a new staircase, interior house painting, resolving water logging issues at the front of the house. We wanted one person to manage everything so that we don’t have to run around especially with my wife being as pregnant and new baby on way. Bob completely took care of everything. I had got few people to provide me with quote of doing the job; Bob quote was the most reasonable. We wanted to give our bathroom a modern look and went for a tiled shower. Our bathroom was renovated from scratch, woodwork, gib, plastering, plumbing, tiling, glass shower; everything was done with high standards. For the house painting we got a lot of feedback from Bob about the kind of colour we should choose so that it looked bright and spacious, very happy with the end result. The old stair case was quite steep and had to be taken out. While putting the new staircase he had to make sure the height of the celling is adjusted properly. The end result was very promising and staircase looks fabulous, seems like it was always part of the house. Our house also had some water logging issues. My earlier idea was to raise whole of the front yard but bob suggested raising the level just at the entrance and putting drainage channels which worked perfectly and saved me $$$. Bob and his team were also able to accommodate other things that came across while we were renovating the place, putting up a new door, a new laundry tub etc. We are highly satisfied with the work he has done and would definitely recommend him to others."

"Very good painter, we were very pleased with the results. There were several different aspects to our job including sanding, staining and painting and all ended up better than we expected (given the condition of what needed to be painted) so we were thrilled. Bob was great to deal with as well and we would definitely use him again."

"Bob and his men have totally renovated our old 1920s bathroom into a modern, tiled , 'wet' room at what I think was a good price. Various structural defects had to be overcome. They worked with energy and skill, handling all the aspects; gib, plaster, woodwork, tiling, plumbing, painting and electrical work. When the odd problem arose Bob was flexible, adaptable to solve it. All three were pleasant, considerate of the property, helpful, worked very effectively. A good job."

"We as a Body Corporate Committee for Parr Terrace made use of this building contractor to repair stairs in our complex communal area. The work that this company did was good. But !!, without our permission they arranged for a rubbish bag to be placed at our Complex's entrance to place the building rubbish in. It has now been 5 weeks since they have completed the work and refuse to pay to have the rubbish removed and this after we agreed that they will arrange for this. Bob never consulted with us, we assumed that like any other building companies, they will arrange for the removal. We are very disappointed and will NEVER suggest his company to do work for anyone. He has been rude to our committee members and hung up on us a few times. If we knew that he would not have the rubbish removed, we would not have paid him for his work. Really a bad experience all in all."
    Bob responded:
"Well as we all know body corporates never tell the full story, I asked the guy who gave us the job if it would be ok to put the rubbish bag near the letter boxes as this would be the best place for pick up he said ok The job was completed on time & has they say in there rating above the work was good However I sent them a invoice with the company's bank details on to pay by internet banking & to my surprise two weeks later they put a CHEQUE into the account which took another week to clear .When the CHEQUE cleared I phoned the Flexi bin company up & told them to remove the bag this can take between 3 & 5 working days Hence a 4 week delay from finishing the job to bin pick up not 5 weeks Had a really bad experience with this so called Body Corporate "

"Bob is a cowboy and doesn\'t understand customer service. He was rude and unreliable. Bob was very hard to pin down to a time, and even then he was very late with no phone call. He did a rough job. Bob offered a cheap price, but that\'s probably because he doesn\'t get many repeat customers. Bob was sexist again women, and he actually told my partner to F-off on the phone when she called him on his cell phone! He wanted me to put a high rating on this site."

"I have just had my bathroom and toilet renovated by Bob and his boys. I am thoroughly thrilled with the final result....Absolutely stunning. I had the smallest, ugliest 1950s bathroom. I now have a tiled bathroom with standalone bath and walk in shower all done to a great standard. I have never met Bob or his boys. I provided them with a key to my house and each day was a surprise for me when I got home. communication was excellent with Bob providing daily updates, ideas and suggestions. I then asked Bob to tile the toilet, change doors, put up mirrors, handles and all sorts of extras which was done without hesitation. I also noticed extra bits around the house that Bob and his boys had fixed e.g. loose tap fixtures in the kitchen and repairs to my kitchen wall - Wow that's going the extra mile.......I really appreciate it. The price for both the toilet and bathroom came in very reasonable compared to other quotes provided. My friends and family think my renovations cost me plus 15k upwards.......hahahahaha. Not even close. I would have no hesitation in recommending Bob and his team."

"I contracted Bob to rip out and replace a bathroom, with the mention of future work of the second bathroom a few months later. Initially the communication was excellent for this job that was to take two weeks. Bob and Martin started work and were great in putting up an additional ceiling supporting beam for that 'just in case' scenario due to the structure of the flat upstairs (which was later proved to not be needed). However after that it all went a bit pear-shape. Bob had a key to the flat so could access at times that suited them. However they arrived at 10 am each day and were off site by 2-2.30pm. Needless to say this job took longer than two weeks. Then they would give the key to the electrician on a Friday so he could do his bit, and I would have to chase up at the end of the following week as to why the builders haven't been around, only to find that the electrician still had the key and that they suppose they had better go and collect it! The window needed replacing with a double glazed version and I had to remind Bob that this needed ordering before the job started which he did 3 weeks out. The window arrived over 6 weeks later and did not fit property so now I have extra lumps of wood outside in the facing of a concrete building. Was the gaps too big for sealant? The wall hung vanity is not level and square and is starting to lean out from the wall on one edge and the drawers don't run smoothly. Part of the floor tiling is not fully grouted, regardless of a request to fix this. The framing of the door frame is not square and instead of redoing, they just put a facing on it to hide the gap. The silicon used for the plug holes and shower area is beige coloured and messy and is very obvious against the white porcelein. A tool was obviously dropped in the shower area and chipped the white coating on the shower tray. The 'paint-ready' gib walls have many imperfections and the hole for an electrical socket was made so big the plug is actually sitting on fabric tape on one side and not sitting on gib. The pipework for the washing machine waste was inserted too high in the wall for manufacturer recommendations and was leaking but I had no response to my phone message and had to arrange to get it fixed myself. The pipework outside the exterior wall is not flush with the wall and very messy. The old plumbing holes in the concrete walls were only filled in upon extra requests from myself. It was also obviously incorrectly piped up with the inlet cold/hot water pipes and when fixed the incorrect pipes were just blocked off and left hanging there and not removed - very third world country looking! This is addition to the lumps of grout/block sealant etc that were left over the courtyard and outside the front door which I still haven't managed to remove. In the end after 3-4 weeks I had to ask them for the key back as I had contracted ceiling plasterers to enter the flat. When that was completed I allowed the builders back to finish with the window, cornices etc so that at least the bathroom could be utilised and completed. The trig bin sitting in my allocated car space was only meant to be there for the initial demolition, or at most for the 2 week job. It was there for over six weeks, despite repeated requests for its removal. And they had the gall to complain that it was full of rubbish. What do you expect if you leave it in front of a block of flats for over 6 weeks! I was just glad to get my car space back. While I believe that this company would be ok at the ongoing maintenance jobs (they do a lot of these and apparently was the reason that they would only spend 4 hours a day on my bathroom) I would not recommend them for any larger renovation jobs. Time-keeping is a major problem with them and a decided lack of communication towards the end of the job. Lots of excuses as well... Needless to say they are not doing the second bathroom at my unit. An additional note is that this was my first renovation project and I was asking for advice/suggestions etc. There was no given until after I had made the decisions and was in the vein of 'you could have done this...'. There was also no talk about any council permits that might be needed etc which for the first plan was a definite requirement until I found out right at the early stage and made some slight changes. They obviously want to come in and just do the job and not have to think. If this is the kind of builder you need then all good, but if you want a collaborative approach or need advice etc then they are not best suited."

"I recently purchased a rental property that needed renovating and had a few quotes in before deciding to go with Abacus, decision was based on a good quote and the overall positive comments on NoCowboys. The renovation work wasn’t a big job in my opinion and if I’d managed the project myself I estimated the time would be 21 days, new kitchen, extending the bathroom and creating a new laundry area, I allowed 28 days to be safe and posted the job with a needs to be completed by June19th in the title. Communication started off great, Bob ripped into the place and we discussed progress every evening and after 14 days I thoroughly expected the whole job to be finished bar the kitchen benchtop by my original estimate of 21 days. We went with Bob’s recommendation for the Benchtop (his friend) that would take 10 days to make and be fitted so still would have all been finished within 28 days. From here the communication dropped off dramatically, although whenever we do speak it’s always in a good manner, it seemed to become excuse after excuse and nothing moved forward. Tiling couldn’t be finished because the plumbers hadn’t been, or we were waiting on the electrician, or the benchtop will be there on Wednesday etc, etc. I then went away on honeymoon and expected everything to be finished off to a high standard when I returned. However this is not even close to the case. The 28 day project is now 73 days and counting. The place still isn’t finished, and although thankfully the benchtop is finally on there’s no oven or rangehood fitted, Bob is away on holiday now so I have been forced to call in a Hire-A-Hubby to finish the job off (all small jobs it’s a day and half’s work). The Hire-A-Hubby, Haydn, could not believe the standard of finish in the work and pointed out several things that were just “totally s***” in his words, this includes the tiling round the bath being at a 5 degree angle from vertical, when you open the bathroom door it hasn’t been positioned properly and you can see the jagged edges of the tiles, nothing has been sealed, the grouting in the bathroom has more mind the gaps than the London Underground, to name but a few. In real terms the delay has cost me $4000 in additional interest payments. I will offset the Hire-A-Hubby cost against Bob’s final payment and that will be that in my book and I’ll chalk the loss up to learning curves. Overall I have learned a lot from the project and experience. I should have moved earlier to get this project back on track and completed, and you definitely should put a more concrete timeline in place from the outset. I do really like Bob and his sons I think they are great guys, however I don’t think after the time and finish I can recommend them on this site. I would be happy to use Bob again as a builder if I was managing the sub-contractors work myself, as I feel the subcontractors he uses have really let him down here, and I wouldn't be ordering a benchtop through his friend either."

"Job was not completed on time or at all and unfortunately we had to ask Abacus not to return to our premises to complete the 2 x bathrooms. Initially Bobs communication was great, however as time went on and I questioned what he was doing and constant requests to fix issues the communication slipped and there was no care at all with job. The plumbing contractors that Bob used were not to a level I would expect and we had to call in emergency plumbers to fix leaks due to no return phone calls. I would caution anyone using Abacus solutions. I feel lucky that I was working at home to be able to constantly check work - this should not have be done! Work for a 15 day time period that was advised took over 2 months to complete. Would not recommend there services at all. Very disappointing."

"Bob and his team did a great job for us completely renovating our bathroom and installing new shower, vanity and bath. There was a lot of work involved as the old bathroom was in a bad state of repair.Gib board had to be replaced and an interior wall built to accomodate the new shower unit. Bob was very happy to work in with what we wanted to acheive and kept us updated on how work was progressing. The bathroom was completed to a high standard. A very reasonable price was agreed at the outset and was not exceeded. I highly recommend Abacus Building Services."
