"Nov 2016 earthquake landslide made damage to one corner of our house — a split copper pipe in gas cylinder with running leak went undetected for 3 months (we were overseas). Had 3 quotes to repair half the small kitchen — namely its floor and 2 walls. Like another quote, BR's max was 10k, said could be low as $6k. (The bench/sink had to replaced, done separately by Wainui Joinery. ) As extremely busy time, only BR could start soon. April 4: Builder with apprentice (lasted a week or 2, could not do the simplest task) began. Straightaway and continuing with all BR tradepeople ( nice chaps but not overseen, monitored by BR, some quite elderly, fitting in other jobs etc) until limped to a finish mid Oct 2017— there was lateness, no shows, long delays, unreliability, poor communication, sickness, injury, botch ups, poor workmanship, enormous mess left for near 3 months so kitchen patio, side path access to garden blocked. To speed things up I located, chose, paid for, transported matai flooring + bought many required things, eg insulation, protective sheeting, I did painting, clearing, sorting rubbish, breaking up floor tiles etc. Various items inside and out were broken & not replaced. The flooring which looks superb had no insulation underlaid. It creaked in one or two places from start . Now the whole of it creaks and alarmingly goes down hill in one place. In spite of objections, IAG paid what appeared a clearly highly doctored account of $20k. IAG liaison said nothing could be done as okayed by technical. IAG didn't come near the job, knew in detail of its deficiencies, the very very difficult time it caused for us for 7 months. Brian Ross with initial impression of efficiency, charm was not evident, as manager throughout nor seemed to take responsibility for his workers. I found him slippery and untrustworthy."

"AVOID this company at all costs or it will cost you your sanity. They are incompetent, useless rip offs who have previously appeared on Fair Go, and should again. Please do not let this company rip anybody else off as they will continue to do to any vulnerable person. I repeat, DO NOT use these cowboys."

"Our experience with BR Contractors now extends to two homes we have owned. BR's have undertaken general maintenance repairs from timber weatherbaord replacement to re roofing, roofing repairs and repainting and recently have assisted in two bathroom renovations with relining walls and preparing floors for tiles.
At all times we have found BR's to be excellant. Liason and communication is great, staff on site have been very good and very helpful and qulaity of work is excellant.

"We had a terrible experience with BRC that ended in the Disputes Tribunal (the referee basically came down half way between what we wanted to pay and what Brian Ross wanted us to pay).

We recommend anyone considering using them get several quotes from other suppliers as the prices are very high (about 1.5-2 x more for the jobs we had done but we only realised that after the fact) as is the interest they try to charge for late payment. For quotes make sure that it is detailed and, for roofs, includes the area that the quote covers.

We also recommend you do not get them to subcontract their jobs out to any other trades. Don't allow any work to be done without first getting an estimate in writing that includes time, materials and any travel/admin costs. Also ensure you approve the number of people on the job.

In hindsight this all sounds like commonsense but should you be reading this advice when it is too late (i.e. you're already in dispute with them), then we would be happy to talk to you about our experience. We spoke to others that had had bad experiences with them prior to our hearing and found it depressing but useful.

"Avoid at all cost. Charged us for an hour of work and they were there less than half an hour. Total bill $172.00. Told us we needed to change two pieces of iron on our roof and said it would be $2000. Went with another company who said it does not need changing just needs new flashings and the cost is less than $200. Rip off artists. Have these guys not been in troble with Fair Go. Thats right I think they changed their name."

"Really good. We only had a small job needing doing, they rang back fast, turned up when they said they would and did the job. Kept me informed too on timing and didn't mind the dog being in the house! Haven't received the bill yet, but they advised of costs over the phone when I booked the job (too small to quote for). Would recommend them."

"Had the bathroom totally renovated. They took the toilet out to lay vinyl, when put back the toilet seat was totally cracked - they claimed it was like that before! Plumbers were throwing rubbish from the 2nd floor where the bathromm is down to the first floor entrance instead of walking down the stairs - they broke a big chunck of wood from the antigue hallstand. After 3 mths the bathroom walls & ceiling were mouldy, I got another painter in who said the paint used was water based instead of enamal based."

"Called them the day after roof tiles had blown off in high wind. They attended promptly, left to cut tiles back at the workshop.
They said they'd return the next day and install the tiles. I assumed they did this while I was at work.
I called a day later and they said it was all done fine.
2 months later the neighbour asked did I know I had tiles missing from my roof, he'd noticed this when on this roof.
That day the bill from this firm arrived. I called and asked did they realise they hadn't completed the work. I refused payment. They threatened legal action, I threatened legal action in return for water damages incurred after inspected the inside area under the missing tiles. They then decided to waive the bill for work they hadn't done.

    Stay away from these cowboys.

"Was not told that hourly rate would be charged no matter how long the actual job took. The job took 30 seconds. Azmatt took longer to write out his account than the actual job. After hours fee charged which I was prepared to pay, and informed about beforehand. I was NOT told that the FULL hourly rate would be charged no matter how long the job took. Had I been informed of this, I would have contacted another plumber from the Yellow Pages to do the job. I was charged for a plunger which the plumber took away with him as well! I rang the business the next day (8 Jan) and told them that I was unhappy but had already given a cheque for job. Wrote on invoice that I had not been told of hourly rate charge. Was assured that the cheque would not be presented until I had spoken to the boss who was holiday for 2 weeks The cheque was presented (9 Jan), and I have never had the courtesy of a call from the boss to discuss my dissatisfaction. Would NOT recommend BR Contractors Ltd. Go to another plumber - ask friends."

"I am a single female living on my own - the job was shoddy, unfinished and when I called them back they took a very long time to rectify the problem

NOT RECOMMENDED for small jobs in my opinion - I felt I took the back seat to the bigger jobs

Workmen climbed all over my bed with thier shoes on as well"
