"Built with Jalcon homes four years ago. Home won two gold medals in NZ house of the year awards.
Great company to build with, no issues and happy to assist in any way to make the building experience great. Highly recommend with a great team, fantastic quality of workmanship.

"We had a fantastic experience with Jalcon Homes. We found their pricing & specifications were much more detailed than other companies we dealt with initially & the salesperson, Ritchie, made helpful suggestions as to how we could adjust the home to meet our budget. The plans & council process seemed to take for ever, but this apparently seems to be the same for most. While building our house they kept us informed, there were a few minor issues, aren't there always?, but we got to the end only a week after they told us initially. So overall we are thrilled with them and our home."

"We had the most disasterous experience building with Jalcon and we do not recommend them.

We were told the PC sums were on the high side and not likely to go over during our discussions with Tony van Leeuwen - after the first 3 blew out significantly, we paid an additional $5000 as per our contract so we could manage the rest ourselves. This was not as a result of any changes we made - this was as per the original contract.

Jalcon assigned us a team of builders and a building supervisor they hadn't used before. This resulted in shoddy workmanship, numerous failed building inspections - the weatherboards didn't even line up on the edges of the house - this was just the beginning. They got the stairs wrong twice and had to replace them and the builders took shortcuts. Windows were not installed correctly and had to be replaced. Communication was terrible and Lindsay Aitken's responses were bullyish and not reasonable to the many mistakes made. Too many mistakes to list here which resulted in the job being delayed 4 months. Although we had a late penalty clause in our contract Lindsay Aitken did not fully honour this. We were going to take it to court but it had become too stressful. One of the worst experiences we have ever had - and we have built before. In fact we have built again since and had no issues with the latest builders we used which further highlights the incompetence of this company. We had a total of 3 different Jalcon supervisors managing our 8 month job and 3 different building teams. Jalcon position themselves as a family business and we thought this would mean they would know the builders well etc - not so. Be very careful dealing with this company, in fact we recommend you use someone else."

"We had our home built by Jalcon. They did a reasonable job, however as mentioned above there were some issues with prices, and a great lack of communication.
Alot of PC Sums I queried with them. There response, is that they were on the high side, and they would not go over them. They went over by an average of 20% in all cases. There was no communication in alot of areas of the job. Things like light fittings, taps, and patterned carpet was just done without any concern as to how I would like it. It ended up costing them as I told them they did it wrong and they had to fix it. Addiitonally when they received their final payment all care went out the window. There were a number of items that were wrong that we found after moving it. It some cases 9 emails/calls over 4 weeks needed to occur to get them fixed. I will not be using them again or recommending them to anyone.

"Whilst acknowledging the comments posted I would offer the following: 1. Jalcon has successfully built over 1,000 houses in Auckland over the last 20 years and won more than 40 House of the Year Awards. We must therefore do most things right, most of the time. 2. At Jalcon we unashamedly put a lot more effort than most, up front, into the design and estimating process before we ask the client to commit to a building contract. If for some reason this doesn\'t result in building a relationship that we believe will survive the lengthy building stage, then we take the view that the client would be better served working with another company. 3. The Design & Build process is like a pressure cooker relationship covering a 12 - 18 month period. All parties need to get along and communicate well, otherwise the end result will not satisfy anyone. Indeed worse: it can wind up being an extremely fraught experience for all parties "

"I couldn\'t agree more with the last comment about this company. We had a similarly unpleasant experience.

We paid $5,000 for concept drawings to our design, and were then subjected to 5 months of fumbling, broken promises and a total failure to follow through on the original agreement.

When we eventually admitted defeat and tried to move on they made a disgusting attempt to extort an additional $5,000 to release the plans we originally paid for.

Great company, great ethics, and awesome customer service - I guess that\'s what you call the \'Jalcon way\'!"

"Despite claims of being a professional company with family values etc , this guy has been anything but... judging by our experience. We have tried to buy a house and land package with him, and after paying a deposit and committing 3 months of our time into planning / quoting / lawyers drawing up contracts / moving into a tiny rental flat etc.. They simply told us to go get stuffed.
After luring us in with an attractive estimate, about 2 Months after paying the drawing deposit. the owner of Jalcon increased our price by $80,0000 which he attributed mostly to a regular price increase they have quarterly, and to items they have forgotten to add to the quote. After lots of negotiations and compromises on our part (by way of de-specing the house) we reached a total price to build that is about $30000 More than the original estimate. We accepted that we were keen to get into this part of Auckland. But wait there is more.. The owner of Jalcon - on the day of contract signing - decided he wanted more money for the land and withdrew the offer!!!!!! He didn’t even have the decency to tell us in person, instead he sent us an email telling us that it’s no longer sustainable for his business to sell us the land at this price. My wife and I were left stunned. We have never in our lives been cheated in that way. There is only one thing this guy will care for and that is the “Margin”. My recommendation - Avoid like the plague.
