Once I decided on a quote, I… was asked to make full payment. This is before I had even had anything done and the reason of buying and freighting the boiler from the UK was given. I refused this, saying it wasnt normal practise to do so and paid half. Then things just sat until Jan when I reminded him and it slowly creaked into action. There are so many details on how this whole job went wrong that I dont think I will drill into it that deeply. But the main issues were, he quoted for various items to install, including the boiler, then these items were not used. The boiler quoted for was a new one, but he managed to get an old one, and made out that this was great becuase I liked the look but I discovered later after being in communication with the manufactorers in the UK that this model had not been made for many years and it look like he had charged me $3500 for a cheap deal he had managed to get online. Because I didnt know anything about any of this, I was confused at first with everything and I had to spend hours online researching what he had installed, how it had been done and why it might not be working to understand what was going on.
The issues were, the pipes for the radiators were not installed properly so they sagged and water bubbles got stuck in them. They were only attached to the beams under the floor with plastic ties so could detach in an earthquake very easily. The pump for getting the water around the system kept burning out, so that the water in the boiler would boil (which obviously is very dangerous) and then none of the radiators stayed hot. They had left one of the radiators nuts loose, so this slowly dripped onto my carpet over a period of 6 weeks and ruined it completely, including the wood below and all the insulation. The pipe where boiling water would go out of the chimney was put so that it actually went back down into the stove and dripped water into the boiler. This was all happening over mid winter, so I was alternatively really cold and then really hot and scared because the boiler was making loud boiling noises. Finally, after all my research and getting him back over and over again to figure out what was going on, I rang Consumer and explained the situation and they suggested getting someone else in to look at it. I managed to find some very experienced heating engineers in my area to look at it, who all told me there was no way it was going to work the way Hernan had installed it and they completely redid the pipe installation and added in a timer to make the pump keep going and balanced the radiators plus various other things.
I got insurance for the carpet but Hernan claimed that it wasnt his fault, so it took a while to get the excess.
There was an agreement that Hernan would pay for the work that my local engineers did as he had not done it correctly, but I have just heard, one year later, that he refused to pay this and it took them having to visit him to get some of the money owed. There is still some owing apparently.
For me this was the final straw. I wasnt going to slam him online, until I heard this.
Hernan Canterna is a very charming man and it is easy to be manipulated into thinking he doesnt mean any harm, but actually, I think he is incompetent and dishonest. His engineering degree is not a heating degree, but electrical and the systems he is installed are heating ones, which to me is very dangerous as he clearly does not know what he is doing.
I would say to anyone who was thinking of using him to steer well clear!!!"
