"Obviously, this company does not care about their customers, looking at the amount of reviews that are on this website. Basically, a guy drove his car into me after failing to merge like a zipper, chased me around the streets of Christchurch, leaned out his window with a crowbar, and smashed out my back window. 😡

Protecta, your insurance, said I contributed to the accident, even though I had the right of way, and the accident happened outside the merging lane. 🚦

I had a car cam, and the videos are all over the Internet. Just search for my name and Protecta, and you'll find it shocking that this company doesn't care about their customers. I have been with them for over three years. 😔📹

Please note that it's important to resolve conflicts calmly and professionally, even when expressing dissatisfaction.

they want me to pay the $500 excress, police said they couldn't dem who was at fault, however protector to save their money has decided to make up a story. however the police have found the person responsible for the crime so hopefully that will washout but the pain and anguish I head with this insurance company was shocking.

"Took out the most expensive mechanical warranty on the market and these D!{€s refuse to pay out on anything using the most crazy excuses. Been waiting 3 weeks for a decision which is not ideal as I’m an essential worker trying to get to work during lockdown. As soon as the garage follows up they get a definite No! I ring and they want me to write a letter to them as to why my mechanical insurance should cover the mechanical breakdown in my car and it could take another 2 weeks. You are frauds. STAY AWAY FOLKS"

    "Beware of this company!!!.
Took 7 months to decide on a claim. Declined claim on the basis that driver who was in charge wasn’t on policy.
Actually, driver was on original policy and if this really was the case, why wasn’t this decision made immediately when claim was lodged?
Had to keep emailing and contacting them to follow up to try and find out what was going on.
Stressful situation and process made worse by an incompetent insurance company.
    Keep Away from Protecta.

"Motorcycle with helmet and gloves in top box stolen, 45 minute show on CCTV of the charming individuals, faces covered, breaking into and then stealing my motorcycle. CCTV footage of myself putting my helmet and gloves in my locked topbox. Protecta declined to pay out for my helmet and gloves - would only do so if I could prove they were damaged.

Protecta, I am sure the thieves are taking excellent care of my helmet and gloves. A Protecta policy joke at my own expense during a time of violation and stress. An encouragement written in policy to go knock doors down till I found the thieves my motorcycle, gloves and helmet myself to prove my topbox has been smashed in and gear damaged. They Protect would pay out then - as informed by the insurance consultant.

Staff professional and polite, even when asking you not to go look for the thieves/helmet and gloves to get my front teeth knocked in.

Insurance companies that cover your helmet and gear when stolen and you don't have to 'prove' damage: Swann insurance, YOUI, NAC insurance, and even the AA (helmet)!

Have been excellent previously when in an accident and other party at fault.

Warning - black humour: Final laugh will be mine however, as I am more likely now for Protecta to have to pay out for their Death Benefit (as I now have to wait/budget and save to replace my higher standard helmet)!

"Absolute abysmal company. Had the same crap the above poster Bernadette had. They had numerous opportunity to let both the panelbeater and my son the go ahead to have repairs made to his vehicle. Raised his excess THREE times over this period, so they were definitely in the loop and also aware that the panel beater was doing the job as they'd directed, two weeks later they decline the claim - stating they were not aware of a minor technicality which they would have been aware of after raising the excess so many times. Now this bunch of money grubbers have cancelled my son's policy and dropped him and the panel beater in a load of crap because they won't honor the claim. We will be seeking legal recourse and bringing this to the attention of media if this insurance company doesn't rectify this. Absolutely livid at the way this company operates and obviously we are not the only ones they have stiffed. Good enough to take the money customers pay but won't cover what the money is for. You will NOT be getting any recommendation from us! Now sort it out! You have my email address. Or will you pretend again like the last time you people rang pleading ignorance?! Most probably!"

"I will never buy Protecta insurance again when I purchase another car they are nothing but rip offs. I put my car into the garage as I lost my power steering. My mechanic contacted the insurance company was in contact with them throughvthecwhole process I had an oil leek that leaked onto the power steering belt This caused the belt to fly off and in the process damaged my radiator. Protecta was told all this and told my mechanic that I would have to pay 3 excesses my mechanic rang me so I rang Protecta to be told that they had. It given their permission to fix it. Which is bull****. They are the worst company out andvill be posting this on Facebook as well so the word gets out to more people not to use them"
    Andrew Shearer responded:
"Dear Bernadette, we are very troubled to read about your dissatisfaction regarding your Optimum breakdown policy. Readers will hopefully be aware how important it is when lodging any insurance claims, to follow the simple claims procedures. The process for all mechanical breakdown insurance providers is very similar and is required in order for the insurance company to assess the claim correctly. Most mechanics are very familiar with the process, and we also advise the mechanic of each step as part of our communication with them. Unfortunately after the initial contact was made by your mechanic reporting a coolant leak, no further contact was made with Protecta Insurance until the repair work had been completed, including the disposal of the compromised parts, which removed any possibility of us assessing the validity of the work carried out or quantifying the final bill. Regrettably, repairs carried out under these circumstances fall outside the scope of cover provided by your policy. We understand this isn’t the ideal outcome you were looking for but appreciate the time you have taken to address your concerns with us. "

"Im never getting a mechanical warranty from these guys again. Paid for the most expensive cover i could get for my car thinking it would come with great service but i was wrong. My car has been away for 13 weeks with no sign of it being back anytime soon. The repairer says that they have to keep on waiting for Protecta to get back to them and is constantly chasing them up.
Have chased up Protecta who then points the finger at the repairer when they are the ones holding it up by not giving the repairer approval to get a new part when the old one is stuffed. Protecta have stuffed around trying to fix the old one when it was completely dead!! That alone has wasted 5 weeks of stuffing around with their " approved " assessor in Tauranga....why dont you have a local one in Auckland??

Warning......do no use these guys for any sort of warranty!!
    "
Andrew Shearer, Assistant Claims Manager responded:
"Dear Mr Bandasak, we are very concerned to read about your dissatisfaction regarding your Optimum breakdown policy. I have reviewed all three cases where Protecta Insurance have accepted claims without prejudice and in full on your motor vehicle over the past 6 months and it appears your dissatisfaction revolves around parts supply. Readers will be aware that in many cases with older model vehicles, New Zealand agents carry a very limited inventory of parts stock and parts are required to be sources from overseas suppliers. Regrettably this is outside the control of Protecta Insurance, and although every attempt had been made to source or recondition parts locally for you, on each occasion overseas supply has been unavoidable. Could you please contact me by email at [email protected] or call me on 0800 776 832 and provide details of your current claim concerning the 13 weeks delay as we have no records of any such claim, other than the two accepted claims lodged 2 weeks ago on the 25 May, and I will follow it up for you. I look forward to investigating this for you and genuinely hope that we can resolve this to your satisfaction. Kind regards Andrew Shearer, Assistant Claims Manager, Protecta Insurance New Zealand Limited. "

"I've been with Protecta for 5+ years for my Motorbike and just added car. Both were way cheaper than any other company I looked at. Getting a quote was so easy and quick. After being knocked off my bike by an uninsured driver, my claim was processed within 24 hours and my helmet replaced. Every time I have had a reason to speak to a customer service rep, they have cheerful, helpful, knowledgeable - I haven't had a single bad experience with Protecta and recommend them often. "

"First off, their customer service has been abysmal. My first contact with Protecta started off by being told that 'as a rule of thumb' my claim might not be valid, a great start. Where is this rule of thumb page?

Early on with my claim, one of the customer service advisers I had the misfortune to come across had an attitude of a cold call recipient, he acted annoyed at me, making me feel like I had done something wrong and it was this phone call that I had asked why I have had no communication and why it was taking so long to which I was abruptly put on hold to then be told 30 seconds later that my claim had been denied and that there is not a complaints procedure to go through (as I had asked for one), um what? you have no complaints procedure? and suddenly my claim had been denied even though 30 seconds ago it was still being reviewed?.right.

One of the reasons for having my claim denied was 'Driving through neglect', now I only drive to and from work and in the weekends, but how would they know? has someone been following me around for the past year that I've had this 'insurance' and watching me 'do burn outs' and 'race people at the light's'?. This was probably the worst thing to hear as they've just assumed and made up a lie.

Ultimately, my claim was denied because of rust, something which they do not cover, but also something which a year of servicing was unable to pick up due to the location (by the head gasket), so suddenly I am meant to be better than the professionals at picking this up and i should have had it replaced (this lead to a blown head gasket). My car is 13 years old and this part has gradually rusted over time, but Protecta were happy to give me insurance on a 203,000km car, no questions asked after I was sold this insurance on good faith that 'anything major wrong it will be covered, that is the beauty of this insurance'.

Upon appeal of the decision Protecta's website claim to back to you 'within 3 working days' however two weeks later it is me chasing them up. I am then told (after ringing them) that is has been received and is being reviewed, ok cool, now we're getting somewhere... 2 weeks pass, oh still nothing once again. Finally I track down and find an email address for someone much more senior in the company who to his credit does put my case to the front of the line for but the process now starts again (so were they just lying that my appeal was being looked into?). 'It is possible that we did not recieve your appeals email', umm well then why was I told on the phone it had been recieved and was in review, completely two different stories.

    Closing thoughts

    * Left without a car for well over two months due to incompetence.

    * I can only fathom what goes on behind closed doors, are the staff trained to talk to customers? yes we are customers, we've purchased something off of you, so maybe show a little bit of customer service.

*Protecta's website may give you an insight into the level of quality you will receive.

    * The appeals process has been comical, no one knows what is going on, I think I gave my email address 6 times.

    * I felt like I was in the wrong trying to get answers to my claim.

    * I encourage you to really do some in-depth research on the car and insurance you're taking out, rust is a big problem to make sure you ask questions as I basically have just given Protecta $1k for no reason.

    * I was sold insurance on good faith (without being able to read the terms and conditions) that if any major mechanical problem was to happen, it would be covered. Lie. Please think twice before taking out insurance, especially Protecta. Why were Protecta willing to sell me insurance on such a high mileage car when there is a high chance something may happen.

    Conclusion:

    * I will never use Protecta again

    * If you reply to this saying 'we are sorry to hear you have had a bad experience', I will not believe you.

    * They have certain words in their agreement to get them out of anything. pointless.

    * Please donate my $950 to a charity of your choosing.
    "

James Wood, National Claims Manager responded:
"Dear Matthew, we are very concerned to read of your dissatisfaction with your Optimum Mechanical Breakdown Insurance policy and sincerely apologise for the breakdown in communication regarding your claim. For the benefit of readers who may not be familiar with this insurance product, Mechanical Breakdown Insurance provides cover for sudden and unforeseen mechanical or electrical failure of the parts covered. All insurance policies have exclusions which mean certain events which lead to a claim may not be covered. With Mechanical Breakdown Insurances these exclusions (events) include mechanical or electrical failure caused by corrosion. Sometimes we get it wrong and when a policy holder of Protecta Insurance is not satisfied with our service we have an internal disputes resolution process designed to investigate the policy holder’s concerns in a fair and transparent manner. This can be escalated to Financial Services Complaints Limited (FSCL), an external complaints regulatory authority approved by the Minister of Consumers Affairs. They can review the dispute and we would adhere to their conclusion. I am unable to go into the specifics of a claim on this forum, but I genuinely want to assist Matthew and welcome him to contact me directly on 0800 776 832. Kind regards, James Wood, National Claims Manager, Protecta Insurance New Zealand Limited. "

"I have used Protecta for over 10 years for car insurance and breakdown insurance for my wife's, my sons and my own vehicles. Over the years we have had several claims and have never experienced any difficulties with service. We find them good communicators and easy to understand. My son recently had a very unusual claim on his car and it was dealt with very quickly and efficiently.

I understand that with all insurance policies, there are always conditions, but fortunately our few claims have always met the policy requirements.

My experience of Protecta is a good company with good policies and people you can talk to.

"In Aug 2014 I purchased a 2000 model Moto Guzzi V11 Sport that remarkably only had 1,783Km on the clock!! Absolutely the find of the century, a lovely machine and a lot of fun to ride until I had a glancing collision with a truck (odometer at this point read a few km's over 5,500) in Nov. A claim was filed with Protecta and seemed to proceed ok until they wanted to write off the machine. I advised them that I was prepared to accept a few 'battle scars' and forego the paint job if the amended list of broken parts were replaced and the machine returned to me in roadworthy condition. I was told I would be contacted "in a couple of days", That was Dec 18th. E-mails that were sent to Protector subsequently were ignored. On Feb 13th I phoned them and demanded to speak to the manager, he apologised and said he would deal with the matter personally and sent me his email address wanting the list of parts the I wanted replaced promising to reply "the same day or within 24 hours". SEVEN DAYS LATER my e-mails are not replied to and I have had no contact from them at all. ABSOLUTELY APPALLING [Feb 21 2015]"

"Warning, get an expensive claim and they will NOT pay.

They have two out clauses in their contract.

    f) Any Mechanical Breakdown that is the subject of a recall by the vehicle manufacturer or to any repairs covered by any other insurance, warranty or guarantee or to any costs arising from the rectifying of any failure of,or defect or fault in, the design or specification of any component.

    i) Any costs arising from contamination of any water, oil, fuel, fluid, or air system by any external influence or arising from corrosion, rust or deterioration.

They will use words in the contract to claim they are not liable regardless of the obvious intent of the clauses.

In my case a Seal failed in the engine which caused water to leak onto the road and cost nearly $7000 dollars to fix as the engine had to be completely dismantled to replace it.

They said they didn\'t need to fix it as the seal must have been faulty and from clause f) \"or defect or fault in\" if it failed it must be faulty so we are not paying.

They also said it had slowly corroded over 10 years then failed suddenly.

Clause i) says in it \"or arising from corrosion\" so they won\'t pay.

Even though there was in my case NO \"contamination of any water, oil, fuel, fluid, or air system\" by any means.

Simply because in the sentence it says \"deterioration\" and \"corrosion\".

What part that fails is not either Faulty, or suffered from some sort of deterioration or corrosion.

Even though I was sold a contract that in their \"Summary of cover\" (which was the only document they gave me until the failure) says that \"The “Major Features (of this contract) are that there is “No Hidden Surprises” , There is no “No wear and tear” clause, There is no “NO Betterment” clause and that the repairer is paid not by myself but “The repairer is paid directly by us” and it Clearly shows that “Cooling system” “Seals/Gaskets” are covered and that “in fact, under “Engine” “all parts bolted within the engine including the Engine Block and Cylinder Head Assembly!” are covered.

RUBBISH, DON\'T BE TAKEN IN BY THESE THIEVES >

The part that failed on my car was a seal that was part of the coolant system and was bolted within the engine. It was a major mechanical failure but according to Protecta is not covered.

Do NOT go through their complaints procedure its a complete waste of time. This failed on my car in December and its now nearly 6 months later and they still say no as they did before the BMW engineers even started work.

"I had protecta insurance for 1 year. First issue : i called because the insurance was suppose to be for just 1 year but they said that it was automatically renewed and that they will only CANCEL it IF i can provide that i have ANOTHER INSURANCE. Second issue: i called in again coz my windshield was broken so i was claiming my insurance.then they said that my insurance was cancelled already and that i can\'t make a claim!!so they had me going in circles!! They we\'re able to deduct money from me but when i\'m making a claim they said that they had already cancelled it the first time i called.but i\'m still covered since they have renewed my policy AUTOMATICALLY.but when i\'m making a claim now, they said that it was cancelled!!!!NEVER EVER DEAL WITH THESE KIND OF PEOPLE!!so much of an INCONVENIENCE!!!"

"My experience with Protecta was, how shall I say, appalling and I wish I\'d never bought a three-year mechanical insurance from them.

The splines of the driveshaft in my Peugeot somehow wore through. The Peugeot specialist that I take my car to said he\'d never seen such a thing happen. He got a driveshaft specialist to look at it and the guy said he\'d only ever seen it happen once before to a 1980s Toyota.

Well, you know what happened next Protecta did their very best to not pay. I was gobsmacked! No matter what I said or did, they refused to budge. They reckoned it was pre-existing, even though I\'d had the vehicle thoroughly checked before I bought it.

Other companies have a fair wear and tear clause so if I\'d gone with one of them, I would have been sorted.

And Protecta succeeded in not paying. It cost me over $4000 to get it fixed. The same damage happened six months later. The car has been deemed too uneconomical to repair so I had to sell it as is. I didn\'t even bother making another claim with Protecta, not after my first experience. So there I am, barely a year after buying my car having to sell it. I can\'t even get the balance of my three-year policy back.

I wish, I wish, I wish I\'d read some of the comments in other blogs about Protecta before I spent all that money on a pointless piece of paper. They\'ve been criticized in other forums about their distaste of paying.

Even writing this has left an awful taste in my mouth. I have to go to the bathroom and spit.

Take my advice and shop around. Get some feedback from people who have actually had things paid for and go with those companies.

"Dear Alf, we are very concerned to hear about your dissatisfaction and I would like to have the opportunity to review your claim. Could you please contact me by email at [email protected] or call me on 0800 435 7868 and provide your vehicle registration number or policy number so I can find your claim in our system. We follow the Insurance Council of New Zealand recommended procedures for escalating any claim where there is a dispute. This naturally includes the opportunity for Alf to present any additional evidence that Alf believes we should take into consideration for his Mechanical Breakdown Insurance claim. Alf will receive a decision or a progress update from me within 5 working days. Our Mechanical Breakdown Insurance products provide cover for mechanical or electrical failures which includes failure by wear and tear of the parts covered by the insurance. We are extremely proud of the fact that in 2011 we accepted 99.7 of Mechanical Breakdown Insurance claims. We look forward to meeting or bettering this ratio again in 2012. Readers will be aware that insurance has exclusions which means certain events which lead to a claim are not covered. For Mechanical Breakdown Insurance these include mechanical or electrical breakdown caused by non-factory modifications, corrosion, driver misuse, or claims where the evidence shows that the failure occurred prior to the start date of the insurance. We look forward to reviewing the claim with Alf’s input, and genuinely hope that we can resolve this to his satisfaction. Kind regards James Wood, National Claims Manager, PROTECTA Insurance New Zealand Limited. "

The dollar savings are appreciated - I hope any claims I might make are handled with the same degree of professionalism; not that I intend to make any claims!"

"I have maxi mechanical insurance. My car has been in the shop for over 2 weeks going through their claims process. I have serviced the vechicle as required at 5000kms and anti freeze has been changed at 5000 kms also. The first time they sent the assessor out to check the problem, they said I had to authorise and pay for pulling the pipe out to check for corrosion. The pipe was pulled out and found not corroded and that it was indeed a part failure, yet they will not accept the claim. When i rung them, they did not want to discuss the matter and said they would be sending a letter out. Completely unprofessional and I feel they have totally mis-represented the insurance that I was covered for when I took the policy, for which I paid $1600 for!"

"I have signed up for a full cover insurance for both of my bikes. When it came to an accident and I needed to use Protecta they failed utterly. Not only are they trying to decline the claim due to road-unworthyness (worn front tyre but WoF was done only 5 weeks earlier) they have been delaying the process ever since. I have been waiting for a Letter of Deadlock for more than 6 weeks now. They just don\'t reply or say they are busy or put you on hold."
    James Wood responded:
"Hi Marcus, I was sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied with the handling of your claim. While I hope that readers will understand that we are unable (for Privacy and Legal reasons) to discuss details of a policy or claim in the public arena, we have spoken with Marcus this morning and the issue is being escalated to his satisfaction. Please be assured that Protecta Insurance always use independent industry approved loss adjusters, assessors and investigators. For those seeking more information, Insurance companies commonly use two independent External Complaints Resolution providers; “Financial Services Complaints Limited” and the “Insurance and Savings Ombudsman”. Decisions made by either provider are binding, and Protecta Insurance will always honour their decision. The Insurance Council of New Zealand also has some very helpful information about vehicle road-worthiness in their Tips section, available here: http://www.icnz.org.nz/consumer/motor/tips.php We always encourage feedback from our clients, both positive and negative, as this helps us strive for continual improvement in our policies and systems. If you have a story to share, please feel free to post it up here on No Cowboys, or contact us on 0800 772 836.
