A revised date for work start was agreed (May 4th). On May 4th, the work was further delayed. I advised that I would like a team of dedicated professionals to complete the job within a reasonable time frame as originally intended. This was confirmed and work re-scheduled for May 10th.
I was assured that Fia (the owner of the company) would be present for the duration of the job which I thought meant on site. I was dismayed when he arrived on May 10th with one apprentice, staying only for an initial hour or so and leaving the apprentice to carry out all the work. A further couple of partial days’ work was done, but I was advised that bad weather was hindrance and progression yet again began to drag.
The contractor's disregard for health and safety was also a concern for me. I was told that the lead-based paint on parts of my house would be vacuum sanded to minimise contamination and the windows masked from the inside which did not happen. I also discovered a heap of lead paint scrapings had been dumped next to my garage. I asked for these to be removed and was assured they would be, but I ended up having to do this myself as no-one turned up as promised and I was worried as I am genuinely concerned about the environment and the toxicity of such things. It was at this point I advised that I did not wish for the contractor to progress further.
The Painting Project stated that one third of the work on my house has been completed, but I disagreed with this and requested detailed justification of what a third of the work entailed, along with the following information:
• A copy of the contractors Terms and Conditions of Trade
• A copy of their Health and Safety Policy
• Itemised breakdown including cost advice of the full job to be undertaken
• Itemised breakdown including cost advice of the work completed to date of job cancelation
• Invoices for the purchase of products that can only be specifically used on my house as noted by the contractor via email
I noted that if I did not receive the above, I would be taking this matter further. I received an email from the contractor with an excuse as to why these documents could not be sent. Some of these documents eventually turned up after multiple requests and some did not
The contractor also abandoned equipment at my property. After numerous emails and txt messages asking them to collect this, I advised they would have 30 days to collect. They later collected some of their belongings and the rest I disposed of as advised with them, noting that my property is not a storage facility for their business.
During this time I sought consultation with the Master Painters Association (MPA), the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) and a Solicitor, all who advised that I should seek reparation. I also sought advice from painting/trade experts as to the quality of the workmanship carried out by the Painting Project ltd. some of whom advised that in their opinion, the work done by The Painting Project Ltd was not of an acceptable standard and noted that additional work would need to be done to rectify sub-standard workmanship. They also noted that the contractor’s Health and Safety practices seemed questionable. I also believe that the contractor gave me false advice, like telling me that surfaces of my house did not require prep and could just be painted over.
I requested that the contractor refund the money I had paid which they refused to do and so I raised a case with the Disputes Tribunal. The contractor said at the time they wanted to settle out of court but did not propose any suggestions to move this forward. Due to Covid-19 the Disputes hearing was postponed. I was still intent on progressing this when the contractor emailed me saying they would refund my money which they finally paid out to me in small amounts over many weeks.
My advice to anyone out there considering using the Painting Project Ltd. is to not employ them if you want to avoid much stress and hassle!"
