"Having previously contracted Grant to undertake a reaosnably extensive weatherboard re-clad on my bungalow, on which he did an excellent job including new boxed corners and other detailed repairs, I asked Grant to construct a wardobe opening in a spare bedroom. The wardrobe company commented that this was the best quality, and most precise, wardrobe opening they had seen. This speaks to the quality of Grant's craftsmanship and his dedication to doing a great job. "Grant is gold ! He was punctual, diligent and hard working. HIs workmanship is excellent. He replaced my deck and it looks better than the original.
He did not charge for travel (which would have been an extra hour per day) and only billed the hours he worked (which included a morning and afternoon tea break but not his half hour for lunch, which is normal practice. In fact the hours were less than I expected as I had been noting his start and end times.
I would definitely use again and… recommend without hesitation."

"We contacted Grant to replace our decking timber in November. The job took longer to commence due to weather. It was completed in March, within the timeframe agreed and to a good standard. He was obliging with some additional work discovered as the job progressed, making practical suggestions which fit with our budget. Costings were transparent and straightforward. "

"Grant is absolutely amazing. He removed the gib on our walls and put up new gib, making sure everything was perfect and level. Organised timely delivery of the materials needed for the job and didn't over-order. He is a tidy worker, always leaving the job site clean, and his workmanship is A+.
He is polite, trustworthy and simply the best.
He has made what felt overwhelming and stressful, manageable and fun.
Highly recommend Grant, can't fault him.
I'd like to add, I've just seen the… appalling review below my review and I would like to address it.

Yes, Grant is a human being and takes breaks. Sometimes he was 5 minutes late. But I did keep track of the time he was here (although I never said so) and we were NEVER billed for those times, infact I believe he dropped off a piece of equipment he hired back to the rental place at no charge to his time, as it was on his way home.

He is the hardest worker, no doodling on his phone or daydreaming, he is constantly working and deserves his breaks - whether he is a contractor or not, what human doesn't think it's ok for someone to take short rest breaks? It is a physically demanding job (we helped out on the ceiling gib day and i was SHATTERED, I've no idea how it does it all day every day).

We were aware that we are billed weekly, every Friday and I always paid immediately. I don't believe someone should come and continue to work for someone who does not want to pay them.

Regarding passing on the trade discount - yes he does - most builders buy at trade and charge you retail, it is common practice. By purchasing it yourself, YOU the client own the goods, and whatever is leftover can be returned so there is minimal waste and it saves money.

I believe the reviewer below does not appreciate the wonderful craftsman that Grant is, and it is their loss. Although I did notice the reviewer gave him an 80% rating on his workmanship, which is generous considering the rest of the review.

"I Contacted Wales based on the reviews I saw on No Cowboys on the 09 May 2023.
He came for a site visit on the 12 May 2023.
I had a few jobs at my property, the initial dealings with him were professional and courteous, giving me confidence that I am dealing with a genuine trades man.
I had the below list of jobs that I required him to do.
1. Lay down ply as flooring in the attic space/storage I had created.
2. 8 Letter boxes to be replaced with new ones (I live in a block of… Units)

3. 1 Timber bollard that needed a proper fix due to coming out of the ground.

I agreed to give him the job based on his terms.

1. No Quote but estimating the attic work to be 3 days

2. No Quote but estimating the installation of letter boxes and timber bollard to be 1 day.

3. His charge at $85.00 Per/Hour + GST 15% = $97.75

4. I have to pre-purchase the goods through his account.

He finally commenced the work. On Tuesday 06 June, 2023, hoping that he shall finish the work by 08 June, 2023. Commencing the work on the Letter Boxes and the timber bollard on the 09th June.

The work for my attic space didn’t finish until Friday 09 June, 2023. Taking 4 days.

1. He says, he will start the work at 8:00 AM however on none of the 4 days while he did the first job of my attic space, he was on time. He says he doesn’t charge travel time and mileage, however, in reality he is not on tools until 30 mins after he is meant to start the work. 8:00 AM. Which means he underhandedly charges you travel time. If one calculates his pay of $85.00 Per Hour. Taking .50 hour = $42.50 + 15% GST = $48.88.

2. He also, will take 2 breaks, he decides by taking his 2 x 15 mins breaks together between 11:00 and 11:30, which he charges you (the customer) also coming to $48.88. This again wasn’t disclosed or agreed upon by me before commencing the work. Or entering into the verbal agreement.

3. Lastly, He wants to be paid on the day he finishes the job. Again, not disclosed or agreed upon prior to commencing the job.

Hence, none of the above was disclosed by him or agreed upon with me prior to commencing the work.

He completed the first part of my 3 jobs, the attic storage space taking from 3 days to 4 days. Sending me the invoice within 2 hours on the Friday, 09 June 2023 that he finished the work.

On receipt of the invoice, I enquired with him over a phone call, on Saturday 10 June 2023, that, was his understanding that I have to pay for his breaks? He is not an employee, he is a contractor and I had not agreed his breaks to be paid by me? He says that’s how always have done. I didn’t want to say anything. I wanted to maintain the relationship and civility.

I also ask him, I need the dates to complete the rest of the work and asked if he can finish the remaining work on Monday 19th & 20th June 2023. By then he estimated that the 2 jobs will take 2 working days to complete.

In conclusion of the phone conversation, I agreed I shall pay his invoice as billed. I was leaving on a work trip that Saturday and I didn’t have much time. Yet, While I was away, I arranged the full payment of his invoice for Wednesday, 21 June, 2023.

I send the email confirming the payment.

I am now looking for a new trade person, I have attached the photo of the mess he has left for me to clean up.

Also, while I was away, he sneakily comes to my house, asks the garage keys from my 80 year old mother and, not sure what he has removed from it, returns the keys and walks away.

I learned it later from my Mother.

So, whoever hires Wales, a word of wisdom, please get everything in writing. As contractors breaks has to be negotiated if paid or unpaid. There is no law that specifies the contractor can bill us. I had the right to deduct his breaks and the time he showed up late, however, I didn’t and paid his invoice in full, I learned later on questioning a few knowledgeable people. Also the fact that he claims he doesn’t charge travel, he actually underhandedly does by showing up late on the job yet billing you for that time.

This is how, one’s decency is rewarded by Wales."

"Grant recently completed my external workshop. The build quality was very high and this building will now last for 50 years plus due to the time and patience taken to get it right.
Not many trades people impress me anymore as most are there to rip you off and don't turn up on-time, Grant is old school and turns up when he says he will and does a great job

"Grant worked on our Grey Lynn villa renovation consistently from Sept 2019 - Mar 2020. The work was extensive and included removal and rebuilding internal and external walls, replacement of floors, window and door installation, preparation and installation of 3 steel beams and everything in-between, including an extensive amount of architrave and skirting installation.
As the property owner and not knowing much about building, Grant was fantastic to work with and helped to guide us through… the whole renovation project. He's got a great attention for detail and I couldn't fault any of the work that he did.

I would certainly use him again and would high recommend him."

"My job was creating an en-suite bathroom in an existing office space. From start to finish I was nothing but very happy with the standard of work the communication and Grants guidance throughout. I was impressed with Grants pride in doing a good job. He was up to speed and helped me with all the council inspections and suggestions of other contractors to use. All of which I did. Electrician, painter gib stopper, tiler. I was pleased with all his recommendations. I did use my own plumber. Would… not hesitate to use Grant again or recommend Wales construction to others. "Our old porch was built in the 1960s. Some of the wooden frame were rotted. Last winter storm blew one of the glass panel away…
Grant demolished the old and built us a brand-new porch. Starting from the first interview till the job completed, the process went smoothly, pleasantly, and according to the plan agreed upon. At the end, we are pleased with the handsome new porch Grant built for us.

"Grant came around on the day we made contact and got back to me on the same day with a good quote by phone & email. I accepted the quote & he was back the next day to complete all the work in a day - another builder told me it would take 2 days. He replaced rotten balustrades and railings & put the finishing touches on a retaining wall which another builder had failed to finish. I am happy with his work. "
