My Kitchen Makeover / Kitchen Fittings & Design in Auckland Region

We had an extremely stressful and disappointing experience with MYKM and the owner, Rob Thomas. We had our cupboards re-lacquered and ordered a new benchtop through MYKM. When it came to install the benchtop, it did not fit and only 2 sides were able to be installed (albeit wrongly) and one side could not be installed at all as the overhang was not measured and hung far too in front of the… cupboards. It was a very substandard job and the basic measurements were not taken correctly during the site measurement. Not only did they try to install a benchtop that didn’t fit, they then tried to charge us $1,000 to fix it.

When we said we shouldn’t have to pay it, Rob Thomas said he would not take responsibility. This was even after he had said face to face on the install day that it was not right. There were many phone calls and emails going back and forward, but they just would not take responsibility or fix it for us. 24 hours after the failed install, he then shocked us by saying he was submitting papers to take us to the District Court. As the customer who had done nothing wrong, you can imagine our shock.

My Kitchen Makeover also left our kitchen in a very unsafe state, leaving live wires exposed when they took some panelling away to be re-cut, which was at knee height and extremely dangerous for our 2 year old. We were left for over a month with two sides of a benchtop that did not fit, and one side that was our old benchtop with exposed wires (which we subsequently had to cover up), as the District Court hearing would take a minimum of 8 – 10 weeks. This we believe was Rob’s tactic to make us give in and pay, instead of having to wait for the hearing. During this time we got statements from a very reputable builder and benchtop company (Benchtop Transformations) who both stated the workmanship was substandard and dangerous.

Once the builder and Benchtop Transformations had confirmed the dangers of the live wires we sent picture evidence to Rob Thomas via email and he must have realised he was in the wrong and offered to give us back $900 of our owed $1398. We were still not happy with this and had to haggle with him over 7 or 8 emails to get our money back that he owed us. After numerous emails we eventually got $1300 back, having to accept a loss of $98, just so we could move on.

We then got Benchtop Transformations to install a completely new benchtop and they did an amazing job. We were still hugely out of pocket and also had to pay twice for the gas fitter to remove and install the gas stove and sink again.

We also had our cupboards re-lacquered by MYM, and the quality is very poor as the paint is chipping very easily and not to the standard you would expect."
