I would rate them 1 out of 5. Phil was recommended by the real estate company selling my house, to prepare my overgrown garden for sale. I was wary from the start, because he didn't return my calls until the real estate company gave him a stern word. When he turned up, he agreed to my terms. That is, an email estimate for cleaning up my garden… (mowing lawns, pruning/cutting where necessary, clearing out the rubbish), but the email never eventuated - he just turned up to my house and said it would, "at the upper end of the scale" be three days' work for around $800, to which I agreed. He agreed to get into it asap and knew the date by which it had to be finished, to allow the real estate photographer to take pictures for the ad. Instead, one month AFTER the photographer was schedule, Phil and his people still hadn't finished the job. He would turn up for an hour, do a bit of work, then not return for weeks at a time. There was never any communication. Then I received a bill out of the blue for "completed job". The job was about half completed, and worse, he'd butchered the garden. A native tree near my letterbox which dies off a little in summer had been cut completely down without consultation, trees in my back yard had been butchered rather than pruned, weeds had been left and good plants had been removed or ruined. This would be a long review if I included all the poor stuff, but here's one example: several times, Phil or his guys turned up without letting me know, and then left, leaving the main gate wide open. We had free-range chickens, which could have easily escaped, or dogs could have got in. I had clearly made the point that the gate always needed to be closed, but my instructions were ignored. Subsequently, I had to employ the services of another gardener to try and fix his mistakes and finish the job. His invoice charged me GST, but his GST number wasn't included on the invoice. I wondered whether he is even GST registered. So then, point by point: 1) Incredibly poor communication skills. 2) Doesn't follow instructions 3) Doesn't adhere to even a rudimentary idea of professionalism, 4) Poor workmanship/skills, 5) Doesn't follow accepted timeline/schedule, 6) Bills us without even finishing the job. To make it worse, he knew that we were in a vulnerable situation - that my Mum had just died, that we were having to sell the house, that I was suffering the effects of a chronic muscular/skeleton condition that was inflamed at the time and prevented me from lifting or weeding. The one star I would give Phil is that he was willing to do a few things other than gardening (for instance, he hosed down the outside of the house). Apart from that, very, very poor."
