We hired him to do two weeks of work in July last year. In October we asked for the keys back and finished it ourselves. Our experience with Rod was frustrating and we have since learned that others have had the same. He talks up the job well but then vanishes and can\'t be contacted for weeks. He took our deposit then disappeared after doing a few bits and pieces. When we finally tracked him… down he admitted that he had spent our money on another job. As the property is a rental we lost a lot of money waiting for the job to be completed.
"When we gave him a second chance, Rod signed a contract with a completion date and penalty clause but then went over it by six weeks. He refused to honor his signed agreement and we were forced to take it to the Disputes Tribunal who awarded us the full amount that we were claiming. However, we only managed to get the money out of him after taking it to Collections and sending a bailiff to his residence.
In addition, the work was definitely sub-standard. Rod liaised with the plumber who was installing the new hot water cylinder however he still managed to put the new shower in with the wrong kind of mixer for the water pressure. He also dabbled with the plumbing (unbeknownst to us) and bent the pipes, causing strain at the joints. This meant that only a few weeks after the job was \'finished\' we needed to open up an interior wall, replace the pipes and mixer and then regib and paint. This cost us a significant amount. Also, he installed new tiles in the kitchen and dining room however less than a year later the grout is coming out from between the tiles leaving it looking shabby and catching all the dust and muck. Having spoken to another tiler, it seems that Rod has a bit of a reputation for this kind of work.
I have nothing personal against Rod Mason but from a professional stand point I\'d recommend giving this guy a wide berth. Its just not worth the time and the hassle.
